Cookies Policy
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. This page lists every cookie this site uses and what each one is for.
The short version
We run no analytics, no advertising pixels and no social media trackers. Nobody is profiled for advertising, here or anywhere else. If you simply read the site without signing in or clicking through from one of our emails, nothing is stored on your device beyond what your browser does on its own.
Cookies we use
Signing in
If you have an account and sign in, WordPress sets cookies whose names begin with wordpress_, wordpress_logged_in_ and wp-settings-. They keep you signed in as you move between pages and remember your screen preferences. Without them the site cannot tell who you are, so these are essential.
ctl_signed_in
A simple marker we set when you sign in and clear when you sign out. Pages on this site are cached for speed, which means the cached copy cannot know whether you are signed in. This cookie lets the page show the right account button. It holds no personal information, only a yes or no.
MailPoet
If you are a subscriber and you arrive here by clicking a link in one of our emails, MailPoet records which pages you then visit, so we can see whether our emails are useful. This is the only cookie on the site that is not strictly necessary. You can stop it by unsubscribing, or by asking us to turn tracking off for your address.
Controlling cookies
Every browser lets you see the cookies a site has set, delete them, and block new ones. Look for cookies under privacy or site settings in your browser menu. Blocking cookies from this site will stop you signing in, but everything else will still work.
Questions about any of this go to Sue Penn, Secretary, at ctl_admin@tiscali.co.uk. Our privacy policy covers what we do with personal information more broadly.
Changes to this page
If we add anything that sets a cookie, this page is updated before it goes live, and the date at the top changes with it.
